Musings on 'climategate'
By now most of you on LJ know of the hacked 'climategate' e-mails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia. These e-mails, their leakage, and the overall response to them seem to touch on many interesting larger topics and I'm still mentally sorting through it all. This LJ entry has two purposes: to help me clarify some of my own thoughts on the matter (I'm not really sure what I'll end up writing below) and to see what many of you have to say as I’m curious to hear your opinions. My purpose, however, is not to discuss the validity of anthropogenic global warming (AGW) itself so much as the way science is practiced and how we, as scientists, interact with the lay public.

And here we go… )

Health Care
I found this article on problems with health care in the US to be pretty interesting. The author makes some good points that I don't think a lot of people are talking about. I don't agree entirely with his proposed solution, but I think I'd prefer it to the status quo (which is something I can't say for the bills currently working their way through congress).

In lieu of a real LJ post, I present yet another amusing interweb link. Enjoy these odd research papers from the NCBI/PubMed website.

It was only a matter of time...
A computer generated CS paper has been accepted to a peer-reviewed journal.

CRAP paper accepted by journal

The journals "director of publications" has the lamest excuse. Seriously.

Are they insane?
A new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie is in the works. But it doesn't involve Joss Whedon. And it does involve those who made the original disaster of a movie.

'Buffy' in for feature relaunch

What on earth are they thinking???

About those bonuses...
I've been reading the news about the AIG bonuses and congress's plan to tax them away in response to the "outrage." My libertarian alarm bells have been going off on this one, partly because of what congress is doing and partly because I don't perceive a lot of other people getting upset over it. Anyway I was planning to write my thoughts here, but then I encountered this post at Power Line that already sums up everything I was going to say beautifully.

Hippie Biologist Productions presents...
Protein Synthesis through Interpretive Dance (1971):

The first few minutes are an introduction from Paul Berg (1980 chemistry nobel prize) with the real movie starting at 3:11. The scene at 13:06 makes this (literally) a little too close to home.

Seriously, wtf?

Our Banana Republic
The Indianapolis Star Tribune reports that in Marion County, IN (where Indianapolis is located), there were 677,401 voters registered to vote as of last Monday.

According to the STATSIndiana website, Marion County had a 2007 population of 876,804, of which 644,197 were over the age of 18.

677,401/644,197 = 105% of the population registered to vote.

Hooray for Democracy!

A bit disturbing...
"Caltech's" latest recruiting video. I'd embed it, but for some reason that's been disabled for this video.

It's bad enough when people confuse Caltech and Cal Poly. This really can't help...

surreal moment of the day
At about 4:00 today I had about 45 minutes of down time in lab and decided to look for a snack. So I wandered through the Stanford biomedical buildings and found some apple ring candy in one of the cafes. I brought it to the counter and had the following conversation with the middle-aged asian man behind it:

Me: "How much are the apple rings?"
Guy behind counter: "One dollar twenty-five." (said with heavy accent).
Me: (Thinking it's overpriced, but I'll buy it anyway). "Alright."
Guy behind counter: "That's ok. You rich white kid. You can afford it."

I looked up kind of surprised, but thought there was no way he actually said what I heard.

Me: "Excuse me?"
Guy behind counter: "Nothing."

I got out my wallet and as I'm getting out my money...

Guy behind counter: "See! You got plenty money."

I am thoroughly amused.

Brainless man
Wow.

Tiny Brain, Normal Life

(If it asks you to register, just get a login/password from www.bugmenot.com)

Everything I know about neuroscience tells me this should be impossible. I just don't see how a person with virtually no brain matter in his head can be alive and normally functioning.

To reiterate, wow.

all done
Finished reading it this morning. I have to say that everyone had very high (perhaps, unreasonably high) expectations for the last harry potter book and that I didn't know if JK Rowling could live up to them. A lot of what happened before had so much mystery around it that I figured a lot of people would be disappointed, one way or another, when all was revealed. But amazingly enough, I think she succeeded in this monumental task, made a really good ending, and that overall fans will be happy.
